TOAST MANY WAYS
Bread is the perfect accompaniment to almost every ingredient out there. Sweet or savory, bread will adapt and make it work. I love bread, it is one of the many reasons I can never stick to a proper diet. I love anything eaten in, on or with bread. Toast bread is especially delicious. There is something very comforting about a slice of toast, and although it can seem quite boring on its own, the moment you add any kind of flavor to it, it immediately transforms into a meal. Breakfast, lunch, dinner or an afternoon snack, you get yourself a meal.
It really is all about the toppings, though. Add a bit of salted butter, delicious. Peanut butter and jelly, yum! Jam and butter? The perfect snack! Eggs? Avocado? Figs? Cream cheese? Anything from an indulgent breakfast to an extravagant party hors d'oeuvres, you can get as creative as you want with toast.
So, I thought, let me put together a few of my favorite toast toppings and share them with you.
Here are nine ways to spice up your toast this fall:
Cream Cheese and Honey
Start your morning with a delicious bed of cream cheese of your choice, and a generous dollop of honey. Feel free to add a sprinkle of coarse sugar to make it sweeter, and/or some coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans.
Avocado Dip
A standard! Smash some avocados with salt, a squeeze of lime and spread it on toast. You can add some fresh avocado for more texture, and even some coriander, a sprinkle of sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Feel free to add a poached egg on top of that for a fulfilling breakfast!
Halloumi and Olives
One of my favorite combinations of all time! Halloumi cheese is absolutely delicious, and if you grill it with a bit of olive oil, you have yourself a little piece of heaven. Dab some olive oil onto the toast before topping it with the grilled Halloumi slices, Kalamata olives and some rocket leaves. You can drizzle olive oil on top, or add sliced cucumbers, which perfectly complement these ingredients.
Cream Cheese and Jam
Dress up a classic by replacing butter with cream cheese! Cream cheese and jam work wonders, and can work for a more healthy dessert substitute. Top with fresh fruit for an extra kick!
Labaneh and Za’atar
This is a childhood favorite. We grew up eating labaneh with za’atar all the time. Top with some green olives and you’ll be transported straight to Palestine.
Mozzarella and Pesto
Here’s a bit of an Italian mix. Top a slice of toast with a slice of mozzarella cheese and broil in the oven until the cheese has melted and the toast has become a nice golden brown color. Spread some basil pesto on top and sun-dried tomatoes, and you have yourself an open-faced sandwich!
Labaneh and Cucumbers
Another childhood recipe and a super easy one. Spread labaneh onto a slice of toast and top with sliced cucumbers. You can add black olives, or sliced tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil for extra flavor.
Pizza Toast
This is something I used to make when I was much younger. Spread some butter onto a slice of toast, then top with a mix of cheeses (cheddar, pepper jack, mozzarella), and some freshly sliced tomatoes. Broil it in the oven until the cheeses have melted and the toast has become a crispy golden brown color. Top with fresh basil leaves and dig right in for your super fast and simple pizza. Feel free to add extra toppings such as tomato sauce, olives or mushrooms.
Nutella and Bananas
Who doesn’t love Nutella? Now imagine a delicious slice of toast topped with Nutella and chopped bananas? Sweet and simple. Sprinkle with cinnamon or cocoa powder for a more Insta-friendly snack! You can also add chopped hazelnuts or almonds to cut right through the creaminess of the Nutella and bananas.
